LINCOLN HIGHWAY NEWS IS A BLOG BY BRIAN BUTKO
The most revolutionary event for the Lincoln Highway since it was founded 99 years ago is now available — free, detailed, online maps of the Lincoln Highway!
The LHA Mapping Committee (myself and 2 dozen others) has worked for a decade to map all generations of the Lincoln Highway, from the obscure Proclamation Route to the equally-rare city feeders. Mapping software expert (and committee chair) Paul Gilger has done a stunning job, spending hundreds of hours to apply our info to DeLorme and now Google Maps. The maps are now available to the public for free. Click www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/map to see for yourself this stunning resource detailing exactly where the LH went from coast-to-coast. Wonderful! What would make this even better is if there could be KMZ (Google Map) files released as well. Then folks could pop them onto smartphones and tablet computers, and properly navigate the LH. The easier it is to follow, the more people that will give it a try.

In the course of your great work on this, did you learn how many segments of the LH are still tagged “Lincoln Highway” on Google Maps? US 206 through Lawrence Township, NJ is still tagged that way.

I don’t think I can count how many places Google has now labeled “Lincoln Highway” on their maps – truly in the thousands. It is really wonderful that the LH is being acknowledged at that level. Note that in most places Google is accurate, but there are a few places where they’ve labeled the “generic route” (read: US 30, I-80) as the Lincoln Highway, when it is in fact on a nearby road.

Is it possible to obtain a downloaded copy of the map — say for Pennsylvania? I have been reading the Greetings book and mapping out the original route but of course would love for all your EXCELLENT work to be made available for an easy download. In the meantime I am print screening…

Hi Chris, thanks for your kind words and glad the books and maps are helping. It took 10 years of intensive research for the all-volunteer group to get this far. I’m sure once mapping guru Paul Gilger catches his breath, the next steps will be taken.
