The 1915 routing of the Lincoln Highway through Fort Wayne, Indiana, will soon be marked with red, white, and blue markers. The [Fort Wayne] News-Sentinel reports that the new signs for the old road will be dedicated by Mayor Tom Henry on May 21, 2009. Currently the only nod to its existence are at each end of the 1915 Harrison Street Bridge, noting the distance to New York (724 miles) and San Francisco (2,660 miles).
Two weather-beaten stone signs easily missed by passing motorists, there are few visible reminders of downtown Fort Wayne’s importance to America’s first transcontinental highway….
“Now you’ll be able to drive around Allen County and know where the road was,” said [Jan Shupert-Arick,] Fort Wayne resident and author of a new book about “The Lincoln Highway Across Indiana.”…
“Right now, it can be frustrating (to find the old highway) in urban areas. There are dead-ends and other obstacles,” Shupert-Arick said, noting that the soon-to-be posted route won’t direct anyone “where it’s not safe.”…
When Henry proclaimed May “Historic Preservation Month,” he said, “We understand that moving forward into our future includes honoring our past, and we know how important it is to the vitality of our city to ensure strong revitalization efforts.”

Roadside artists, authors, and photographers are wanted for the 2009 Lincoln Highway Association Conference in South Bend, Indiana, June 15-20, 2009. A reception will offer an easily accessible place for the public and LHA members to meet those who create the works. Imagery and books are especially encouraged that relate to the Lincoln and Dixie highways.
The conference will feature an author and artist public reception on Thursday, June 18, at the South Bend Century Center, where products will be for sale. Authors can reserve a table to display and sell books but there’s limited space to display artwork and photos in the vendor room and reception area at the host hotel Holiday Inn.

Dave Zollinger, aka Spiny Norman, has been expanding his Goshen Lincoln Highway blog so much that it’s already spawned a sequel at www.indianaslincolnhighway.blogspot.com called “Indiana’s Lincoln Highway.”
It’s already got some great stories, like a visit to the well-known Magic Wand drive-in restaurant in Churubusco, and the start of a cross-state tour at the Ohio line.

The cover to The Lincoln Highway across Indiana has been released, showing a classic view of one of the Lincoln Highway’s cast-iron state line markers—this one at the Illinois border. The book was written by Jan Shupert Arick for the state’s LHA chapter. It will retail for $21.99 when published in Spring 2009.

Historic New Carlisle Inc. is teaming with the Indiana Lincoln Highway Association Inc. to celebrate the original route of the Lincoln Highway through New Carlisle on Saturday, October 11, 2008.
Lincoln Highway Day in New Carlisle (about 14 miles west of South Bend, Indiana) will feature street banners, a walking tour of the town’s National Register District, and at 2 p.m. EST the dedication of a Lincoln Highway kiosk at City Hall, 124 E. Michigan St. (old Lincoln Highway). A reception will follow at the Inn at the Old Republic (304 E. Michigan St.) until 4 p.m. Lincoln Highway memorabilia will be on exhibit, and the Gift Shop will have LH merchandise for sale.
The Indiana LHA received grant funds from the national LHA to underwrite the fabrication of Lincoln Highway interpretive kiosks in New Carlisle and Warsaw, Indiana. The kiosks will share the heritage of the Lincoln Highway with thousands of visitors each year.

The Lincoln Highway Buy Way — Aug 7, 8 & 9, 2008 — is a yard sale that stretches hundreds of miles along the famous coast-to-coast road. Homeowners, businesses, and civic groups set up antiques, yard decorations, and lots of other things to buy for mile after mile. The event has grown to include Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia: click here for details about some of the larger organized events in each of ths states. Here’s more info from the Ohio release:
The Lincoln Highway Historic Byway created this event four years ago (in 2005) on the outside chance that it would ‘go’ and we’ve been busy managing it ever since,” said Sara Lou Brown, Wyandot County’s Visitor Bureau director and president of the state-designated byway group. The first year saw over 250 yard sales across the Ohio portion of the Lincoln Highway, America’s first coast-to-coast paved road.
As the original road was improved from 1913 to 1928, it took several parallel alignments in a few areas, which may confuse “non-history-savvy” shoppers, but thanks to many organizations wanting to bring traffic to their door, a new traveler’s guide and map will be printed showing not only the road map of the highway, but also a listing of many yard sales and community events along the way. This free guide will be available in mid July.
Mike Hocker, executive director of the byway noted that “we think we are going to have over 700 yard sales in Ohio, parts of Indiana, and even Illinois this year…but the best news is that yard salers, of which we have virtually no control, seem to be organizing into larger and (cooler) venues for the hot August fun. This makes for safer traffic and parking, provides for restrooms and other creature comforts, and makes for longer browsing of more “stuff.” Communities are also adding festival-type activities such as concerts, car shows and rallies, food and kids’ activities…all to make the event more enjoyable for those travelling.
Yard Sale participants may also upload their yard sale information onto the byway website, (www.historicbyway.com) which shoppers can then print out and take with them to follow as they shop.

Cindy’s Diner has been named one of the winners of a Hoosier Hospitality Award, and if you’ve ever visited with owner John Scheele and family, you’ll know it’s well-deserved! Recipients are recognized for going above and beyond their normal duties at a hotel, restaurant, attraction, or other tourism destination to provide excellent customer service. The tiny Valentine-brand diner is located on the Lincoln Highway at 830 S. Harrison Street in downtown Fort Wayne.
An awards reception will be held Monday, May 12, at 1:30 pm in the Statehouse Rotunda in Indianapolis. Cindy’s will receive the award from Lt. Governor Becky Skillman. Light refreshments will be served.

Location will be Teibel’s Restaurant, US 30 at US 41, Schererville, Indiana. It is being held in conjunction with Illinois LHA. Among the highlights will be honoring long-time LH researcher and devotee Art Schweitzer, who tirelessly researched the nearby Ideal Section. Also, Cynthia Ogorek will be signing her new book, and guest speaker Trish Eccles will speak about the Indiana National Road Byway Application Process.
