CA Lincoln Highway Assoc to tour Central Valley

LINCOLN HIGHWAY NEWS IS A BLOG BY BRIAN BUTKO
The California Lincoln Highway Association will tour the Central Valley Route from Sacramento to San Francisco, via Sacramento Valley and across the Carquinez Strait on Saturday, October 30. Tour departs and ends at the Holiday Inn Sacramento I-80 at 9 am. Cost $25 or $40 with a guide. Each year, the California Chapter of the LHA hosts four self-guided cruises and guided tours. Cruise along in your own car, or ride along as a passenger in one of our guide cars! The cruise is open to passenger cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, classic cars, and antique cars capable of freeway speeds.

One-day excursion begins and ends in Sacramento. Highlights include: Old Sacramento, Tower Bridge, Yolo Causeway, Davis, Dixon, historic downtown Vacaville, the Solano County Courthouse, entrance into Napa Valley on Jameson Canyon Road, historic Vallejo, Carquinez Strait, Rodeo, Pinole, Berkeley Pier, Bay Bridge, Lincoln Highway markers in San Francisco. Return trip to Sacramento on I-80.

Lincoln Highway walk continues to Lake Tahoe

Dennis Crowley just returned from walking the Lincoln Highway from Sacramento to Take Tahoe. He sent the summary below plus I’ve included some of the photos he’s posted online: the first shows him on the original 1914 pavement now on private property in Eldorado Hills. The third photo is in the vicinity of Strawberry, Calif.

This leg into the Sierra Nevadas started with urban sprawl but soon turned to speeding traffic on the twisty, narrow, and very steep highway that often had little or no shoulder, all while Dennis pulled his 100 lb. trailer. Of course, the descent towards Nevada had its own challenges!

The words of Brian Butko summarized my last walk on the Lincoln Highway from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe far better than I ever could have: “That’s a long uphill climb!” No truer words were ever spoken for many reasons. For reasons still unknown to me, I managed to sprain both ankles two weeks before taking on my second walk of the Lincoln Highway a few weeks ago. Thanks to taking things slow and a triple-digit heat wave in the Sacramento metro area that kept my muscles heated up when I walked, I soon found myself admiring the majestic beauty of Lake Tahoe. Besides the obvious challenge this journey was to be the first time I would use the trailer, now affectionately called, “The Man-Wagon” by my neice Amber to camp which meant being without any support vehicle for several days and pulling approx. a hundred pound load behind me. So to say, “That’s a long uphill climb” was the perfect ending and perfect summary to a journey that, in the end turned out to be a huge success.

From 1998 through 2005, Crowley walked and worked his way across America from Chicago to California on Route 66. He now calls the effort Cross Roads, “a single purpose and a simple message. By promoting America’s historic highways Cross Roads seeks to call attention to our country’s Christian heritage. The purpose for covering these highways on foot is to make the statement that America needs to return to and walk in her spiritual ‘old paths.’” He walked his first segment of the LH a year ago.

Walk, Don't Run — on the Lincoln Highway

Suddenly everyone is on foot along the Lincoln Highway. Following up on my last post about running the LH (with a quick reference to the 1960 song by the Ventures), Dennis Crowley has announced his plans to again walk part of the route this fall. (I reported on his first leg last October 6 and 8.) Walking America the Lincoln Way will take him from Sacramento, California, on September 14 to Eureka, Nevada, by October 29.

He’ll depart from the Shell Service Station, 4900 W. Capitol Ave in West Sacramento, and make 6 miles that day, reaching the intersection of Capitol and 26th St. He’ll soon be making it twice as far daily. Dennis says:

The preparations to get things ready to deal with the desolation of Nevada have been more than I realized so I backed things off. AAA didn’t name U.S. 50 “The Lonliest Road in America” for no reason. Walking this stretch and on to Salt Lake City next year will make my walk across the Mojave on old Route 66 in California seem like a picnic. Thanks to technology, however, I should be able to make this walk safe and comfortable. I am doing a lot of research into satellite personal locator beacons, satellite phones, gps, and other such things such as portable lightweight solar panels to keep batteries charged and allow me to run my portable DVD player. Afterall, I need something to do on my days off right?
