March 19, 2010In a follow-up to my post of Oct. 23, 2009, about the former Penndel airplane restaurant — once a well-known roadside attraction along the Lincoln Highway in eastern Pennsylvania — another blogger at bethanybroadcast.blogspot.com dug deeper to report this:
Even cooler, upon some research, I discovered [here, a link to this blog was listed] that the plane was restored, but contrary to the source [since corrected plus check the comments], it’s not in working order. “The aircraft, along with the others in our collection, are accessioned under the National Museum of the United States Air Force which require the aircraft to not be in a working condition,” said one commenter who claimed to work at the Air Mobility Command Museum where the plane is located.

Ohio's Larry Webb honored with Jefferson Award
March 11, 2010Mike Buettner reports that LHA member Larry Webb of Van Wert, Ohio, has been honored with a Jefferson Award for his many years of volunteer service. An article in The Lima News mentions his work with both the local historical society and the Lincoln Highway. The nomination was made by LHA members Art and Connie Weber, also of Van Wert.
Mike sent this photo from the dedication of the Ohio’s Lincoln Highway Historic Byway in April 2004: “The ribbon-cutting was in Van Wert, appropriately, because Larry and Kriss Salters (also with scissors) were the two people who did the most to make that happen, processing a lot of paperwork with ODOT to make the thing a reality.”
Lincoln Highway Bridge Festival and 5K in Tama
March 3, 2010About 200 people are expected to participate in the Lincoln Highway Bridge Festival 5K Run/Walk in Tama, Iowa, on Saturday, May 15, 2010. The run is part of the annual bridge festival May 13–15 that will include a carnival, ice cream social, street dance, pancake breakfast, and parade. The small concrete span that’s the focus of events is the most famous bridge along the coast-to-coast Lincoln Highway, with its side rails cast to spell out “Lincoln Highway.”

Joliet Lincoln Highway mural recalls camp site
March 1, 2010Another Lincoln Highway mural was unveiled in Illinios on Friday, February 19. The mural in Joliet tells the story of auto camping and campgrounds such as the one in the city’s Pilcher Park. This mural is the second in a series of 40 that will be installed within the Illinois Lincoln Highway’s corridor by Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition with funds received from a Federal Highway Administration grant. ILHC is the byway management agency for Illinois Lincoln Highway, the only National Scenic Byway in northern Illinois.

The Illinois Lincoln Highway Colaotion is saying goodbye to long-time Associate Director Diane Rossiter. “We owe her an immense debt of gratitude for taking us to a new level,” says Project Director Bonnie Heimbach. “When she first started we were just enhancing our website and taking our visitor guide form a map format into a comprehensive guide … and believe me, the Gazebos and Interpretive Murals were just pages in our Master Plan. Look at us today!”
Program Director Sue Hronik will take on increased responsibilities. Already in charge of creating the Interpretive Panels for their gazebos, Sue will be the prime contact for the mural project, the new exhibit, and a re-editing of the documentary for their website. They are also welcoming Mary Jo Coleman as part-time Byway Coordinator and point person for the website, partner communication, and marketing.

Looking for pottery place near Ship Hotel

Forty years ago, I rode Route 30 on my Honda Superhawk 305 from Pittsburgh to New Jersey to visit my girlfriend. Somewhere east of the Ship Hotel, I stopped for gas and a snack at a roadside establishment that had a large yard full of pottery figurines and lawn ornaments. The owners made and painted the stuff themselves. Do you have any idea what the name of the place was and if they or their successors are still in business?
Does anyone else recall this pottery business that would have been near Bedford, Pa.?
Rochelle lighthouse no longer a Beacon
February 16, 2010Friend Road Dog just wrote about his recent trip from Dixon to DeKalb, Illinois. Sorry to say he reports that the The Beacon Inn restaurant in Rochelle is now a Chinese buffet and that the lighthouse was removed from its sign. S.S. Grand View Ship Hotel memorabilia for sale
January 22, 2010Olga Herbert, executive director of the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor in Pennsylvania, has a friend who wants to sell his collection of Ship Hotel memorabilia. Anyone interested in purchasing part or all of the collection should send their name and phone # to Olga at office@LHHC.org. In about a week, she will send the info to him and he will follow up by telephone. NOTE: no portion of the profits will go to the LHHC, she is doing this as a favor since he doesn’t have e-mail.
The complete story of the Ship Hotel is due out in March in a book written by, well, me. I began researching the Ship in 1988 and became friends with Clara Gardner, granddaughter of founder Herbert Paulson. Clara is gone now but her children graciously permitted me to use many, many family photos. Look for more peeks inside the book in the coming months.
