Illinois cuts prices for Buy-Way sale supplies

June 30, 2008

The 2008 Lincoln Highway Buy-Way Yard Sale will again stretch from West Virginia through Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday August 7-9 (note only Aug. 8-9 in Illinois). Anyone along the various routings of the Lincoln Highway can have a yard sale and/or business sidewalk sale. In its second year participating, the Illinois Chapter of the LHA has cut the price on yard sale signs and increased the number of free services. Yard sale signs will be $8 and those purchasing a sign who include a street address will be advertised with GPS coordinates and maps. Signs are available at the Lincoln Highway Association National Tourism Headquarters, 136 N. Elm St., Franklin Grove, Illinois, or online. T-shirts prices have been cut too — order them through cafepress.

The Lincoln Highway Buy-Way originated in 2005 in Ohio, Indiana joined in 2006, and Illinois and West Virginia in 2007. This year, Iowa is hosting a Motor Tour across the state, making for activities of nearly 1,000 miles along the road.

In Illinois, the Lincoln Highway passes through Chicago Heights, Matteson, Frankfort, New Lenox, Joliet, Plainfield, Aurora, Batavia, Geneva, Maple Park, Cortland, DeKalb, Malta, Creston, Rochelle, Ashton, Franklin Grove, Dixon, Sterling, Morrison, and Fulton. For more information, visit the state chapter’s web site or contact State Director Kay Shelton at lincolnhighway2010@yahoo.com, (815) 748-7211, or call the National Tourism Headquarters at (815) 456-3030.

Update on 2008 Lincoln Highway Buy Way sale

May 19, 2008

The Lincoln Highway Buy Way — Aug 7, 8 & 9, 2008 — is a yard sale that stretches hundreds of miles along the famous coast-to-coast road. Homeowners, businesses, and civic groups set up antiques, yard decorations, and lots of other things to buy for mile after mile. The event has grown to include Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia: click here for details about some of the larger organized events in each of ths states. Here’s more info from the Ohio release:

The Lincoln Highway Historic Byway created this event four years ago (in 2005) on the outside chance that it would ‘go’ and we’ve been busy managing it ever since,” said Sara Lou Brown, Wyandot County’s Visitor Bureau director and president of the state-designated byway group. The first year saw over 250 yard sales across the Ohio portion of the Lincoln Highway, America’s first coast-to-coast paved road.

As the original road was improved from 1913 to 1928, it took several parallel alignments in a few areas, which may confuse “non-history-savvy” shoppers, but thanks to many organizations wanting to bring traffic to their door, a new traveler’s guide and map will be printed showing not only the road map of the highway, but also a listing of many yard sales and community events along the way. This free guide will be available in mid July.

Mike Hocker, executive director of the byway noted that “we think we are going to have over 700 yard sales in Ohio, parts of Indiana, and even Illinois this year…but the best news is that yard salers, of which we have virtually no control, seem to be organizing into larger and (cooler) venues for the hot August fun. This makes for safer traffic and parking, provides for restrooms and other creature comforts, and makes for longer browsing of more “stuff.” Communities are also adding festival-type activities such as concerts, car shows and rallies, food and kids’ activities…all to make the event more enjoyable for those travelling.

Yard Sale participants may also upload their yard sale information onto the byway website, (www.historicbyway.com) which shoppers can then print out and take with them to follow as they shop.

For more information and official yard sale supplies or details about listing in the travelers guide, call (419) 468-6773.

Hotels, fast food, homes for rural intersection

April 16, 2008

The Mid-Week newspaper of DeKalb County, Illinois, reports that a major retail and housing area will be built along the Lincoln Highway at a busy but still rural intersection on the east end of DeKalb. The mixed-use development at the SE corner of IL 38 and Peace Road (an exit off I-88) will feature two hotels, a full-scale restaurant, four fast foods, four retail buildings, a gas station, and 585 houses (each on 1/16 acre). Only one of the four corners currently is occupied – a greenhouse on the NW. Click the image below to see a panorama of the SE corner from Google Street Views.

This combined view is looking east along the Lincoln Highway/IL 38. The development will replace the trees at right; the I-88 interchange is down Peace Road at far right.

I received an advance copy a couple weeks ago of The Lincoln Highway Around Chicago by Cynthia L. Ogorek and have been enjoying it. A full review will run here shortly, but till then, you can read what the The Times of Munster, Indiana, says about it here.
